THE COBY FOUNDATION OFFERS GRANTS FOR EXHIBITION IMPLEMENTATION AND EXHIBITION PLANNING.

If you are considering an application for exhibition planning, please go to the bottom of the page. If you plan to apply for exhibition implementation, please follow these instructions for the formal application:

The Foundation requires seven copies, each with a cover sheet from this Web site: http://www.philanthropynewyork.org.

Implementation applications must include:

  • a description of the exhibition, its goals, the audience for whom the project is intended and interpretive strategies to be used.
  • the dates (months and year(s)) of the proposed exhibition.
  • an explanation of the structure of the exhibition, including sections and examples for each.
  • the exhibition team, for example, curator, scholarly consultants, exhibition designer and educator with bios for all.
  • ten hard-copy color visuals and captions with each copy of the application.
  • checklist of the works to be included.
  • if funds are being requested for conservation, a treatment proposal, estimate and illustration for each object.
  • a description of exhibition-related programs and the audience for each.
  • for catalogues: table of contents, specifications, number of copies, co-publisher or distribution plan.
  • for Web sites: a description of Web content and who the Web developer will be (the Foundation prefers that Web sites not use Flash technology).
  • project budget, including income and expenses.
  • other organizational information as detailed in the application form above.

Please note that applicants need to include an audited statement and IRS letter in only one of the seven copies of the application. Do not use, for any copies, presentation binders and dividers. Binder clips are sufficient. Also, do not use a type size smaller than 12 points for the application narrative.

Preliminary Inquiries

Prospective applicants should submit a preliminary inquiry— a two-page description plus budget by mail or e-mail to:

Ward L.E. Mintz, Executive Director

The Coby Foundation, Ltd.

511 Avenue of the Americas, #387

New York, NY 10011

e-mail: cobyfound@nyc.rr.com

Please note:

The Coby Foundation does not fund operations, such as staff salaries and overhead, or capital projects, including storage furniture.

If you are planning to apply for exhibition planning, please note the following:

Planning grants are intended to allow museums to secure consultant expertise for research, evaluation (including condition) and documentation, and for developing and refining art historical and humanities themes. Museums may also use planning funds to commission essays for a Web site or catalogue. In making application, institutions must commit to an opening date for the exhibition itself, which should be within two-and-a-half years of the commencement of planning. Receipt of a planning grant does not assure funding for implementation.
